About The Stranger Effect

Imagine a stranger walks up to you and threatens to slap you. Would you invite them over for dinner later? If a stranger called you a degrading name, would you assume it meant they liked you? If a stranger demanded to know where you were, who you were with, and exactly when you’d be home, would you mistake that for concern? Probably not. You’d recognize something was wrong. But what happens when that stranger becomes your spouse, partner, or someone you love? Suddenly, threats become empty words, insults become things said in anger, jealousy becomes affection, and control becomes concern. We begin finding explanations for behavior we would never tolerate from someone we didn’t know.

The Stranger Effect is more than a publication. It’s a movement to change how we recognize, understand, and respond to abuse—especially when familiarity makes it difficult to see. It begins with one simple question: “If a stranger did this, how would I react?” By temporarily removing the relationship label, we create space to recognize danger, coercion, manipulation, and abuse without the excuses that can cloud our judgment. This perspective isn’t just for people who identify as victims. It’s for those who may not yet recognize what’s happening to them, the people around them who might otherwise overlook the warning signs, and the advocates and professionals working to protect them. Because the relationship may change how we see the person, but it shouldn’t change how we see the behavior.
